2016 Lifetime Achievement Award Finalist
In 1999, Jeffrey Owens’s life was turned upside when his daughter, Melissa, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. His daughter’s illness took a toll on his family, both emotionally and physically. During this period of time, Jeffrey was introduced to the Children’s Cancer Association (CCA) when they offered Melissa a wish through its Dream Catcher Program. Jeffrey and his family immediately understood the comfort CCA brings to those whose lives are affected by cancer; CCA understands how a simple break from hospital monotony can heal the exhausted spirit and restore a sense of peace.
Jeffrey has served on CCA’s Board for the past 11 years. By sharing his own family’s personal story, he has leveraged his personal and professional network to raise thousands of dollars for the organization. Jeffrey championed fundraising for the Caring Cabin – a serene wooded retreat that provides tranquility for cancer patients and their families away from the hospital. Since its completion in 2006, nearly 4,000 patients and family members have visited the cabin free of charge. More recently, Jeffrey has taken on a lead role in funding a new study on CCA’s MyMusicRx program, which provides bedside musical experiences for children suffering serious illnesses. The study will measure how the program decreases pain and anxiety for children recovering from surgery. Jeffrey is honored to work with the CCA because it offers ongoing support to families like his own during their time of need.
