As a finalist for the 2011 Volunteer of the Year Award, Mary Bersot genuinely believes in the power of many. “I am only one of many working to support MedShare International,” Mary explained. “There are thousands of volunteers and staff behind the scenes that have made it possible.”
For the past eight years, Mary has been an active member of MedShare International, a non-profit organization that collects surplus medical supplies and ships them to impoverished health facilities in the developing world as well as free clinics in the United States. Today, she serves on the Western Regional Council. “I am still very involved, but more focused on results rather than activity,” Mary explained, and MedShare International has definitely seen results.
“We have shipped over 1,375 40-foot containers of surplus medical supplies to countries around the world with donations such as the funds awarded from Invest in Others,” Mary said. “These discarded supplies and equipment were headed to landfills and because of MedShare we are able save thousands of lives.”
Mary also recognizes the increased importance of philanthropy in the financial services industry. “There is a growing commitment in our field to give back. Ceremonies such as the Invest in Others Awards encourage generosity and set examples for those entering the investment field,” she noted. “I am pleased to be an example for others to share what they can to support those less fortunate.”
But staying true to her character, Mary knows she is not alone in her efforts. “Philanthropic work is rewarding and humbling. There are so many people doing incredible work.”
