Few people pair music and finance, but for Maestro Arturo Sandoval and Wealth Manager Michael Velazquez it was the perfect combination. “When I asked what Arturo wanted to be remembered for, I heard nothing about his Grammys or Presidential Medal of Freedom. After reflecting wistfully, I heard: ‘I want to do something for children,’” Michael described.
Michael suggested Arturo start a non-profit. In a little over two years, the idea has become a reality as the Arturo Sandoval Institute (ASI). The organization provides scholarships, instruments, clinics, master classes, and financial support for students pursuing music. ASI has also hosted three benefit concerts where talented high school musicians have the opportunity to rehearse and play with professional musicians.
As the namesake of ASI, Arturo has difficultly taking credit for the organization’s accomplishments. “ASI is prospering through Michael’s leadership, financial acumen and organizational skills. Because of Michael, we are growing at the right pace and making a solid impact,” Arturo praised.
However, Michael does not feel the need for recognition or praise. “My motivation is rooted in the stories and reactions of joy from the children we help. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” expressed Michael.
Michael earned Honorable Mention for the 2015 Community Leadership Awards.
