Arts for Learning-VA

2023 Grants for Good Recipient

What is the grant for and how will it benefit the community?

Funding will be for the expansion of the Coastal Virginia Wolf Trap Initiative. In 2023, Arts for Learning joined the affiliate program of Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning through the Arts which is part of the Wolf Trap Foundation for Performing Arts of Vienna, Virginia. Wolf Trap (WT) and its affiliates work collaboratively with schools to deliver vital virtual and in-person classroom residencies, professional development workshops for teachers, and family workshops that serve the unique needs of their communities.

As an affiliate, Arts for Learning professional teaching artists receive intensive training in developmentally appropriate practices, emergent literacy, and early childhood curriculum standards. Once trained, the artists will partner with early childhood education classroom teachers using the performing arts to engage children, enrich their learning and reinforce the curriculum.

The grant will partially underwrite the costs of training a 3rd cohort of four teaching artists and provide residencies for local Title One schools. Arts for Learning has eight artists who have been trained and have secured the funds for the 23-24 school year to provide twelve 5-session and twelve 16-sessionresidencies. Next year Arts for Learning plans to expand the number of residences and are seeking funding from multiple sources.
