San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) promotes health, wellness and social justice for communities most impacted by HIV through sexual health and substance abuse services, advocacy and community partnerships. SFAF provides a range of free health services to over 25,000 people living with or at greatest risk for HIV and/or hepatitis C. SFAF strives for a day when race is not a barrier to health and wellness; substance use is not stigmatized; HIV status does not determine quality of life; and HIV transmission is eliminated.
Ferdinand Garcia became involved with SFAF in 1997 when he signed up for a 7-day, 545-mile charity bike ride, now known as the AIDS/LifeCycle, benefiting the organization. During the ride, he met parents who grew to support their gay children, which inspired Ferd and gave him hope. Within six months of the ride, Ferd came out to his mother and nine siblings. Ferd has since made it his life’s mission to raise awareness and eliminate stigma regarding HIV. Over the past 24 years, Ferd has demonstrated a profound commitment to SFAF and LGBTQ+ equality as a volunteer, advocate, and fundraiser. Through his annual fundraising efforts for the AIDS/LifeCycle event, Ferd has successfully raised more than $10 million to help end HIV.
