2021 Grants for Change Winner
- $25,000 Grant towards its CAY2 Girls in STEM Program
- Grant Secured by Adrienne Herrera Griffin Capital
In what capacity are you involved with this organization?
“Board and staff member Raul Wikkeling and I built a service model of community-based educational programming together. CAY2 uses a similar model to the one that we executed in New York City for students of color. This model and cause are very important to me. I am a donor and I fundraise for the organization’s programming. I have also had the honor of coaching the amazing CAY2 students on their presentations as they roll out the app coding projects and business plans that they have developed together in teams.”
What is the grant for and how will it benefit the community?
The Coleman A. Young II Educational Foundation (“CAY2”) is a 501(c)3 philanthropic foundation that provides STEM (Science, Technology, Education & Mathematics) focused resources, such as computer equipment, educational materials, and in-person instruction, to under-resourced public-school students in Detroit. Its goal is to help improve the STEM participation rate among its participants, who are majority Black and Latinx. The $25,000 grant from Invest in Others will be used to fund ‘CAY2 Girls in STEM’, a project that facilitates after-school STEM education for high school girls in Detroit.
