Charles Dunn

2022 Catalyst Award Finalist

St. Francis Community is a low barrier homeless facility in Tucson, Ariz., offering a variety of year-round programs, including a summer day cooling shelter and a winter overnight shelter. The organization runs a food bank and food delivery program and provides emergency “bridge” shelter for homeless veterans waiting for housing after VA hospitalizations. As a founding board member, Charles Dunn helped organize St. Francis Community’s 501c3 status and revitalize the board. He is a mission critical leader for the organization and heads up strategic planning along with grant writing.

Charles was greatly impacted by his father, a man who respected the poorest of the poor and served his community by offering medical care to those who couldn’t otherwise afford it. Charles believes all men deserve dignified access to food, shelter, and warm clothing – this belief inspires his service. Thanks to Charles’ leadership, 2,500 individuals are served annually and enjoy dignified care.

The thing I learned working with the homeless community is that they are no different from you or me. Oftentimes, our own lives are very close to the edge.
