Compelled by the dramatic disparity in educational achievement in our national’s capital, Theodore A. Schwab co-founded Capital Partners for Education (CPE) in 1992 to break the multi-generational cycle of poverty. Mentors, scholarships and other life changing resources are provided to some of the D.C. area’s most motivated, low-income children. An engaged and passionate champion of the program, Schwab has played a critical role in growing and shaping CPE into the dynamic college and career preparatory nonprofit it is today. As president, co-chairman emeritus and board member with a perfect attendance record for 23 years, he continues to participate in major organizational decisions and fundraising efforts. Schwab also helps recruit the mentors the nonprofit provides to students. In addition to his supervisory roles, he helps connect CPE students with career opportunities and regularly hosts CPE events. Under his leadership, CPE has expanded from its initial six students in 1992 to serving 256 last year. The results have been transformational for the more than 500 children assisted by CPE to date: 70% complete the program and graduate from high school; of these, 97% enroll in college, and 70% of college enrollees successfully graduate – more than three times the rate nationally and five times the rate in D.C. Some former students now serve as donors, mentors and advisors to CPE’s board and committees.
